尤拉〈Leonhard Euler 1707—1783 瑞士人〉於1707年4月15日誕生於瑞士的巴塞爾城。父親是一個鄉村牧師，很喜歡數學，常給尤拉講一些有趣的數學故事，使尤拉很早就對數學產生了濃厚的興趣。

 

13歲那年，尤拉考入了巴塞爾大學，這個全校年齡最小的學生，很快就成為約翰‧伯努力教授的得意門生。但是尤拉的父親並不希望兒子讀數學，想把尤拉轉到神學系，以便畢業後容易找到一份像樣的工作。

 

為此約翰‧伯努利，這位當時瑞士最著名的數學家，還親自登門苦勸尤拉的父親，終使得尤拉的父親改變主意。從此尤拉在約翰‧伯努力的指導下，堅定地走上了獻身數學的道路。

 

尤拉不知疲倦地探索了數學的各個領域，即使最詳細的數學史中，也很難羅列出尤拉的貢獻。
